TOURISM FIJI TAKES THE “QUANTUM LEAP” AT THIS YEAR’S 2009 TOURISM FIJI FORUM

This month’s recent 2009 Tourism Fiji Forum outlined major challenges but also key opportunities that the tourist board and its travel partners will deal with in Fiji’s long term goal of reaching the 1m visitor mark by 2016, remarked Regional Director The Americas Ili Matatolu.

The annual event attracted more than 75 wholesalers and travel professionals who gathered in Los Angeles recently at the Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel & Convention Center October 6-9, 2009 near some of the city’s most prestigious motion picture studios.

Presiding over the three-day conference entitled, “Taking The Quantum Leap” was CEO of Tourism Fiji Josefa Tuamoto who addressed the group and said that in the last five years, room inventory in Fiji has increased by 27% and the goal for the national tourist board is to target one million visitors by 2016 which will generate $1.6 billion in foreign exchange.

Invited keynote speakers for the annual event included John Clifford, President of International Travel Management and Michelle McCue of Michelle McCue Communications who presented an informative talk about social networking and how this worldwide new media is changing the way travel professional market their resorts.

Also addressing the group of travel professionals was Regional General Manager Candy Andrus and General Manager Sales & Marketing Michael Nacola of Air Pacific, General Manager Pacific Sun Manoa Kamikamica, Myriad Marketing’s Katherine Kasparian, Research Director Heather Dougherty of HITWISE, Regional Sales Director for the Western Region Patrick Franklin of Continental Airlines, and Destination Marketing Manager Jim Brody of TripAdvisor who spoke about “The Role of User Generated content In Travel Planning.” Following the presentations, US wholesalers provided updates to the audience.

The event culminated with an Air Pacific sponsored dinner and optional activities which include a Fiji Day Program of golf at nearby De Bell Golf Course or mingling with the stars at Warner Brothers with a VIP tour of the legendary Hollywood studio followed by a lunch at Castaway Restaurant in Burbank, California.
